One week before Easter, Caleb got an idea. Saturday morning he was up early and rode into town. His first stop was the blacksmith shop.

Big George looked sideways when Caleb walked in all alone. "What you want, boy?" he said. "I ain’t got time to fritter away." When he raised the hammer in his hand, the muscles in his arm bulged like a sack of snakes. Clang went the hammer against the anvil.

Caleb held his hat in his hands. "I just came by to say I’m sorry," he said.

"Sorry?" Big George bellowed as the hammer came crashing down on the iron anvil. "What you got to be sorry about?"
