Chapter eight

Knock. Knock. Bang!

Mal bolted upright in bed.

“You’re going to be late for school!” Jeff’s voice boomed from the other side of the door.

Heart slamming against his chest, Mal scrambled out of bed and tripped over his sopping-wet sneakers. Why hadn’t he hidden them with his wet clothes? He kicked them under the bed, groaning when he realized he’d have to wear them to school.

He picked up the alarm clock on his desk. 7:22. Had he slept through it or just forgotten to set it again? If Mom would just give him his own phone like every other kid in the universe had…

Jeff banged on the door again. “Are you up?”

“Yes!” Mal shouted back. He didn’t need his stepfather to remind him that the bus would arrive in less than fifteen minutes.

“Good. ‘Cause I’m not driving you to school if you miss the bus.”

But if I miss the bus, I could check on Sunshine… No, that wouldn’t work. The school would call Mom if he didn’t show up. Besides, it was still raining. Surely the mare would be comfortable inside her stall until the afternoon.

Mal threw on a sweatshirt and a dry pair of jeans. He winced as he squeezed his feet into the soggy sneakers. Jeff wouldn’t notice them, would he?

He needn’t had worried. Jeff didn’t look up from his phone when Mal walked into the kitchen. He opened the refrigerator and took out the lunch bag Mom had packed for him. He added in two granola bars to eat while he waited for the bus.

Jeff continued to scroll through his phone.

Mal gathered his things and walked out the door, not bothering to say goodbye.
