It was a two-day journey to the Needle, if you went at speed. Evander took his time and a less direct route, because although they were well and truly married, he had quickly realized they knew very little about each other or the places from which they came.

It was easier for him, of course, because he could simply point at things to explain them. Elena smiled when she saw an acacia tree, winking at him and making him remember that first time in his bedroom, the way she’d scratched his back bloody.

They’d gone to the civic building before they left, deep down to the archives, where Evander had shown her the register, one of the most sacred artifacts in all of Arktos. It was a leather-bound book with thousands of pages, each one bearing a name of a soldier and their family. The first signature, on the very first page, was faded from years of opening and closing the register. It was preserved only thanks to a thin, spelled covering that kept the ink from rubbing off.

Atreus Akti. The first general of Arktos, who’d led the Arkoudai from Katoikos to their new home. Elena had told him about the caves in Lukos where each Lukoi made their mark on the wall to show they were part of the community, that they’d seen their history laid out in drawings and knew what it meant to count themselves one of them. Evander had watched with pride as she’d carefully inked her name on the most recent page: Elena Akti. And with that, they were married. He’d kissed her there, and she’d embraced him, and he’d carefully closed the book and set about preparing for their trip.

They traveled in the early morning to avoid the worst of the heat, spending the brutal midday hours either at an outpost or in the wilds of the desert, beneath a canopy to shield them from the sun. They spent the second afternoon and evening at an oasis, swimming in the cool waters and learning more of each other beneath the shade of the palm trees. Evander could not recall ever having been so happy, and he knew he would need to send word to Irene and Lysandra that they had, in fact, been right.

“Tell me about her,” Elena asked, the third morning, as they packed up and continued toward the Needle. “The woman who had your children.”

“Her name is Irene Leos, and her wife and submissive is Lysandra. She’s a musician. Irene and I were friends growing up, and when I realized it was time to have children, I asked her if she would bear them for me. She is a clever, strong woman.”

“But you weren’t—there was nothing between you?” Elena asked, shifting in the saddle. They didn’t have horses in Lukos, so it had been a bit of a challenge to teach her to ride one but, she’d said with a smirk, I’m getting the hang of riding things, soldier.

“Nothing romantic, no. As I said, we were friends.
