Ten

Nate

I pull my arms in tighter, but it doesn’t help with the way I’m holding the container in front of me. I do my best to ignore the fresh snow falling as I bury my chin in my scarf, making my way across the parking lot to the mall. My phone vibrates in my pants pocket, but I keep walking. I’m not going to stop to check my phone before I get inside. Besides, it’s probably just Clark messaging me again. It’s been almost a week since his sister caught us kissing in her living room, and I’ve been avoiding him.

After I left there, Dad saw the tree Clark bought me and I froze up. I didn’t know what to tell him or if he already knew. I told him I missed having a real tree, and we put it up in the corner of the living room, but it still sits there completely undecorated.

It’s probably a good thing Anna walked in when she did. Clark is still leaving in a few weeks and the whole idea of getting to know him to ease up my guilty conscience of sleeping with Dad’s best friend probably wasn’t the brightest.

Does it really matter if I like him?

Soon he’ll be gone, and I’ll be on my way to college. All this will just be a fun memory.

I walk in the mall door, shaking from the sudden temperature change. Outside was chilly, but in here it’s almost too warm. I’ll be glad to ditch my coat once I get to the break room inside the workshop. I skip the locker room, heading right to the middle of the mall where the Santa set up is. It’s still early morning, but I’m not the only one here. I spot Alec talking with Holli in front of the workshop as Alec adjusts his camera.

“Morning Nate, hey what’s in the container?” Holli asks. His pink hair looks extra bright today, like he recently touched it up.

“Cinnamon rolls,” I mutter. I felt like making some of my own after Dad and Anna made them the other week. “Why are we waiting out here? Is Noel not here yet?” I glance around, looking for our Santa Claus. I thought he and Billy were supposed to be here this morning, too. We’re getting closer to Christmas and busier by the day.

Alec shrugs, turning his attention from Holli to me. “He must be running late.” He lifts his camera to aim it at me. “You’re looking tired today, didn’t get enough rest?”

“You know some people lose sleep because they’re busy getting laid. How early did you get up to make cinnamon rolls, Nate?” Holli asks with a laugh. “Stress baking?” His hand goes for the corner of the container, lifting the lid slightly before I slap his wrist.

“It’s none of either of your business how I spend my nights. If you want a cinnamon roll, drop it.” I’m not in the mood to talk about my personal issues.

“Santa incoming,” Alec says, drawing our attention to Noel and Billy walking toward us.
