Why is it so hard to celebrate the wins?

Is it just me? I know it’s not, but I’ll own it. A friend congratulated me on a recent accomplishment and asked me about it. I politely said, “Thank you.” I did share more with him, but I kept it short. Apparently, my dumb brain didn’t want to show in any way that I might have enjoyed the recognition or, worse, come off as full of myself. So, I said something to downplay it or get through the story quickly.

But he asked me! He started the conversation by congratulating me! Still, my mind is screaming at me to stop talking, that he doesn’t want to hear about it and is just being polite. So, because I’m uncomfortable with accepting praise or appearing overly proud of an accomplishment, I end up devaluing his interest. I’m dismissing a friend expressing heartfelt congratulations.

There’s a profound difference between being proud and telling everyone how wonderful you are. I think we fear that the former automatically leads to the latter. Or, at least, that people will perceive it as such. That worry gets in our way, so we clam up, deflect, and downplay the importance of the recognition.

But honestly, that achievement represents something. Maybe you got a promotion. Perhaps you landed a client or booked your first speaking gig. Each one of those has significance. It’s a recognition of hours of hard work and persistence.

When someone says congratulations, take a moment to enjoy it as an acknowledgment of their genuine congratulations and recognition of all you did to make it happen. They could be pointing out a great example of a Success Frame.
