Example 7

Some people say ‘people only become a dentist if they cannot become a doctor!’ However, I disagree with this statement profusely. Working as a dentist encompasses a wide range of skills and notions that you do not find in any other field of treatment provision. Where else are you faced with such varied tasks ranging from interacting with patients to performing procedures which require exquisite attention to detail and accuracy? In my opinion, a career in dentistry offers an individual both intellectual and manual challenges which I would relish immensely.

My ambition to become a dentist stems from my experiences gained whilst working in an NHS dental practice as an assistant. I have spent the last 18 months gaining an invaluable insight into what is expected from a dentist in the day-to-day running of a busy practice. Through talking to patients, I have learnt what is required in terms of interpersonal contact and have enjoyed interacting with a range of people. I am particularly attracted to this field due to the diverse nature of dentistry and the opportunity to specialise in fields ranging from orthodontics to cosmetic dentistry. Other work experience I have carried out has included working as a volunteer in my local shelter for the homeless. My responsibilities have included interacting with the public and providing food and blankets to the people staying at the shelter. This experience has been very rewarding and has reinforced my desire to work in an environment where I can interact with people and make a difference to their lives.

At school I have enjoyed success in both my academic and extra-curricular activities. Through studying Human Biology I have come to understand the complex nature of the human body and would like to further my understanding and knowledge of this at university level. I am an active member of the school debating team which has improved my confidence by speaking to large numbers of people. I am part of the school football and rugby teams where Personal Statement examples for applying to Dental School I have experienced success in reaching the last round of the regional finals for both sports. I am also a keen musician and enjoy playing the piano and guitar in a local rock band, successfully playing at a number of local venues. My hobby of painting models, ranging from cars to aeroplanes, has enhanced my manual dexterity which is an essential requirement in dentistry.

I would describe myself as a motivated and committed individual who intends to take advantage of the wide range of opportunities that studying at university has to offer. Through studying Dentistry I will be able to fulfil my lifetime ambition of becoming a dentist and successfully managing my own practice. A career in dentistry will provide me with the ongoing challenges of personal development which I desire, enable me to have regular daily contact with patients, and provide me with the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives.
