Day 21

The next morning, I found Holly out in the garden, munching on a slice of toast, gazing out across the valley to the distant mountains. She was wearing pantyhose again, suntan and sheer with a loose and flowing skirt, a seemingly regular feature in her daily attire that made far more sense to me now, having seen what I’d seen the previous night. There was no sign of Del.

“Hey,” I said, sitting down on the rough hewn wall beside the patio. “Everything okay?” I added, summoning my final reserves of motherly concern for my former assistant. I wanted her to know that I was there for her, that if she was in over her head, I could help. But most of all I wanted to ask her what it was like, so any motherly support I could have offered was minimal at best.

“I broke up with Todd,” she said cheerily, turning to me and smiling with a kind of distant, dream-like expression. With a shudder of recollection, I remembered her look from the night before, a far cry from the naive Christian girl who had entered the house with me, a million years ago. “Called off the engagement this morning.”

I nodded. Somehow, I wasn’t surprised. But what shocked me the most was that I didn’t blame her.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” I lied. I paused and took a breath. “I want you to know that you can talk to me about anything, you know,” I added. “We HR girls need to stick together.”

She peered at me and leaned her head to the side, smiling softly. There was a knowing look in her eyes, almost a pitying expression. In that instant, I had no doubt that it wasn’t Holly that needed protecting. Not by me at least.

“Thank you, Sophia,” she said quietly. “I’m very happy. Del takes care of me.”

I heard myself sigh. “Del…?” I said, but couldn’t continue.

Holly smiled again, and picked up her empty plate, standing up from the garden table. She turned and walked towards the house, then paused as she passed me.

“You’ll see,” she said with a subtle wink. “And I can’t wait!”
