Miles

It was with great reluctance that Miles had finally kicked Jamie out of his flat. "You're not losing your job over me, Jamie. Or getting in trouble over it, I'd feel terrible."

Jamie had grumbled a little about not being dressed for the drizzle, but he'd got up and gone. Once Miles had seen him to the door, he'd dived guiltily into the guest bed and wrapped the covers around himself, trying to keep in some of the heat that the other man had left behind.

Usually, Miles would never have let last night happen. Having a guy back to his place for a cup of tea and a chat was unusual enough, but becoming this obsessive and clingy about someone was unheard of. He wasn't sure why this felt different, or what was so special about Jamie. He hadn't been in the bed for more than a minute before he felt guilty and ashamed, slinking back to his own bed. It had just taken him by surprise, how attracted he was to Jamie. Since he'd broken up with Oskar – a break-up that had left Miles no clear lesson to learn and no obvious mistake to avoid in future – he hadn't had any crushes he couldn't force himself to ignore. Now Jamie was making him act like a total fool, and he still barely knew the man.

It had been a long time since he'd let anyone in so quickly, and he couldn't remember the last time he'd let someone who wasn't Addie or Gina stay overnight in his flat. So it was a good step, letting someone in. And it was good that it had been Jamie, that it had been someone considerate and gentle who'd slept through the night without bashing around and disturbing Miles' already broken sleep. He suspected that the way he hadn't wanted to let him go might not be quite so healthy, but maybe it was normal to feel that way about someone you were just beginning to realise you'd fallen for. He couldn't remember; it had been a very long time since his last relationship. He'd thought he was happy then, but that had all gone horribly wrong. He had to believe that this time could be different.

Miles considered texting Gina, asking for advice, but Jamie was a mutual friend and it would feel too much like kissing and telling, at least for now. He also considered asking the internet via a trusty search engine, but the truth was that the internet lied. Besides, those corners of the web, the ones that dealt with love, and romance, and even sex, tended to be crewed by jaded old people's bitter stories and the ramblings of teenagers with no idea what they were talking about. In his current state of cautious optimism,
