âIâd feel better if we occupied the high ground,â Sarge said.
By the time they got back to their campsite, their tents were flapping wildly in the wind, and the swaying trees threatened to snap.
Sarge didnât look happy. âI donât like this one bit. This wind means business, and the rain isnât letting up. There are hills about two klicks to the east of us. Just to be safe, letâs go there and wait this rain out.â
âHow far is a klick?â Lightning asked.
Sarge smiled. âItâs a kilometer, something you usually drive in a few seconds. This will take longer.â
âNo kidding,â Lightning said, pulling a tire out of the thick mud.
Squinting, they made their way through the fierce rain.
âI scouted this area when we arrived, and I spotted some caves in those hills!â Sarge shouted, leading the way. âWeâll be safe there.â
Lightning tried to stay close to Sarge and the others, but he quickly fell behind. With the torrential rain, there was hardly any visibility.
Suddenly on his own, Lightning stopped. âSARGE, WHERE ARE YOU?â
There was no answer.
Lightning continued to inch forward. His racing tires kept slipping and spinning in the muck. âThis is crazy,â he mumbled. âIâd be warm and cozy right now if Mack and I were headed to the race like we were supposed to be.â
Lightning finally reached one of the caves and shook the rain off. His friends were nowhere in sight. âAt least itâs dry in here,â he said.
He drove inside. The cave was completely dark. âHello?â he called, his voice echoing. âSarge? Fillmore? Mater?â
He felt his way in the darkness, then stopped short when he touched something. He was suddenly blinded by a bright light.
âAARGH!â Lightning yelled.
âSorry,â said Mater, turning so his headlight was no longer shining into Lightningâs eyes. âI fell asleep. What took you so long?â
âMater! You scared me!â Lightning exclaimed. âWhere are Sarge and Fillmore?â
âFollow me!â Mater said.
Mater sped deeper into the cave, and Lightning did his best to stay on his tail so he didnât lose the lightâor his friend.
âWHOOOOO-WHEEEEEE!â Mater howled in the confined space, turning left and right into connecting caves.
âSlow down!â Lightning hollered as he struggled to navigate the caveâs uneven terrain.
