Mercy. She missed sleeping with Bryce and his heat.

Rio peeled herself out from under a sheet, two blankets and a white goose-down comforter at ten forty and stood, still tired, still sleepy and, cringing, still sore. She crossed the loft’s wooden floor hobbling like a ninety-year-old woman in labor and cranked up the thermostat for both floor and gas-forced heat. Back to big utility bills.

She needed coffee and started the maker, then found a quart of grapefruit juice in the refrigerator. The usual morning feast came with a slice of raisin toast swathed in butter and cream cheese. Lifting breakfast toward her mouth, she remembered the day—weigh-in.

Groaning, she realized today she had to stair step and Troy, her physical trainer, would stop by shortly to work the devil out of her tired body if she’d gained one pound.

In all this pain?

The buzzer sounded louder than a school bell.

Whimpering like a child, Rio fed the garbage pail her morning sustenance and grabbed a protein drink from the fridge.
