Chapter Eighteen

“Clay?” Indigo said. “Is everything okay?” The concern in her voice was completely unexpected. Maybe that’s why it nearly killed me.

I had to take a breath before I could respond. “Yep, all good.” My tone sounded clipped and fake to my own ears. “Where’s Jenks? Shouldn’t you be drawing him?”

“He just left,” she said. For some reason, it made me feel slightly better to know he wasn’t still there. A glance up at the clock told me he’d been there maybe an hour. That didn’t bode well for him hooking up with her.

“Oh,” I said, delivering more of that Henshaw charm.

“But while I’m pissed that you did a switcheroo and didn’t tell me, and that you decided to play matchmaker without my consent or knowledge, that’s not what this call is about.”

Whatever this call was about, I wasn’t interested in a lecture. Or worse. “I should go.”

“Clay,” she drawled. It wasn’t quite admonishment, but close. “Come on. Talk to me. Tell me what I did to make you run off last night.”

I laughed without humor. “Well aren’t you full of yourself if you seriously think you have that much power over me.”

When in truth, it was a cookie that had been my undoing.

A long moment stretched between us. Her pointed silence gave me the opportunity to replay the words in my head. Damn, I was such a dick.

“I’m sorry,” I said on a sigh. “Indigo...I didn’t mean that.”

Apparently, the silent treatment was over. “Didn’t you?” she bit out. “You seem to have a pretty low opinion of me sometimes. I’m an artist—like that’s a bad thing. I’m full of myself, inconsiderate, disrespectful. Anything else you’d like to add?”

“It wasn’t—”

“No, really,” she interrupted angrily. “Let’s have it. Why don’t you just get it all out there? And by all means, don’t hold back—you’ve never spared my feelings before, why start now?”

“Indigo...I...”

“Come on, Clay,” She prodded. “What else?”

“Are you into me?” fell out of my mouth.

Well. That shut her up. Another long silence stretched between us. I clamped my lips closed, suddenly terrified of what else would tumble out if I didn’t.

“What?” she finally whispered.

“I...I asked if you’re into me. I mean...that kiss.”

She exhaled loudly. “What about forgetting it ever happened? You said it didn’t mean anything. You said you understood I was emotional.”

She was right, but taken with other evidence... And I guess I couldn’t forget that kiss. In fact, I’d thought a lot about that kiss. More than I was willing to admit.

“Your sketches,” I said. Because we were already having a painfully awkward conversation, why not go all in? “I saw your book.”

Another long, meaningful silence. If I hadn’t heard her breathing, I would have thought she’d hung up on me. Half expected it, actually. Certainly wouldn’t have blamed her.

“Last night, when you went to get the cookies. I looked at your sketchbook. At all the pictures of me.”

“You did WHAT?”

“I know you asked me not to,” I explained, trying to sound apologetic. “And I’m sorry that I ignored your wishes, but I was curious.
