The craggy slope looked neither too sheer, nor too daunting to me. John and Elton on the other hand, one of whom is rather sizeable, and the other, not so. They didnât look too pleased about being outvoted on the choice of path we take.
âI canât believe you agreed to this Claire?â John said, looking a little betrayed.
âExcuse me, but have you seen the state of me?!â She exclaimed, pointing both hands at her face. âIâd probably look better if I fell off and died, so I might as well climb!â Humble little backpack in tow, she hurried forward to be the first to make the ascent.
âItâs official,â announced Elton under his breath âthat crazy girl has got more balls than us.â
Claire clambered upwards like a woman possessed, with a complete disregard for her own personal safety. She slowed for nothing, her rage so prevalent that I momentarily considered the possibility that the rock itself might keel over in an impossible display of surrender. In no time she reached the summit of our miniature mountain and stood defiantly at its peak, teeth still grinding as she swept another sodden lock from her equally sodden face.
âSeriously, how hard can it be you guys?â Lexey spoke to the two reluctant mountaineers.
âWell, in case you havenât noticed blondie, Iâm not exactly built like Spiderman over here,â John exclaimed, pointing to himself with a single chubby thumb âand Iâve had taller meals than this guy.â He waved a dismissive hand in Eltonâs direction. Lexey rolled her eyes and exhaled heavily. She marched over to John and tugged the pack from his back.
âHey what the-?â He murmured.
I was absentmindedly rolling a stone beneath my aching foot, when the rucksack rolled to a halt in my field of vision. My reaction was an incoherent grunt.
âCome on, lead by example. These guys are letting your side down right now.â Lexey said, just as a rather substantial rock connected forcefully with Johnâs shin.
âAhhh, ahhh, ouch, ouch, owie, ouch, shit, shit, shit.â He rasped comically, bouncing on his one good leg.
âHurry the hell up you pussies! I can see the others from here, theyâre already at the base of that dumbass hill thing!â Claire roared violently. Any femininity she may have normally emitted had completely disappeared, falling prey to her foul mood.
I took that as my cue to begin climbing. I grabbed the backpack and slung it lazily over my shoulder, then placed a tender paw on the jagged rocks. Moving my weight and that of the backpack felt effortless, although I did have an unfair advantage over my fellow travellers. I hadnât been hauling that thing around all day for a start. That, coupled with the fact that I had recently become a creature of legend meant that when I joined the shrieking rock thrower at the top, I couldnât quite understand what all the fuss was about.
âRight, whoâs next?â Our fearless female leader asked in a tone that suggested her patience was wearing incredibly thin.
âNot me!â They both replied in unison, raising a hand as though they were still in class.
