CHAPTER 29

Abigail

There's a lot of information about people available online if you know where to look, especially if they aren't very paranoid or tech-savvy.

One of the things I've been using Aunt Clara's wifi for in the past few days is gathering information on Jack Caine. Since he believes I'm presumably dead, and he may want to return me to that state, it seemed prudent to know whatever I can about him.

Jack's main address isn't the lake house. It's actually registered to another couple entirely—something that raised my hackles until I found their social media posts detailing their vacation. Apparently Jack is a "house-sitter," though if you ask me, his standards could use some updating. That bathroom door he destroyed to get to me isn't going to be easy to replace.

Along with other things, I discovered the exact make and model of his car, his phone number, where he works, and even his work schedule. Apparently, in addition to "watching" houses, Jack commutes to a neighboring small town to work night shifts as a security guard at a warehouse.

That means he won't be in town. If I'm lucky, Washington will be. I'm hoping he's at the lake house his pack uses as their base.

Clara has taught me plenty of things about werewolves and their territorial rules in the past few days. One of those things: alphas mark the territory of their pack with their scent and the energy of their presence. All pack members spend most of their time eating and sleeping in that territory.

If they travel outside its borders without their alpha, it's not for long. The further away betas especially get from their home, the less stable their transformations become, and the more tenuous their alpha's hold is on them.

That's why Jack keeps all his "friends" close to him at the lake house. It's also why they slink around him, looking nervous. From what I understand, alphas can have a tight leash on their betas, but they really only wholeheartedly settle down into packs that also contain an omega.

So girls keep disappearing because he's hoping to make one. My stomach turns at that thought—Frankie and the others deserved better. As soon as I figure out what he did with them, I'm going to leave an anonymous tip with the sheriff's office.

And with the FBI, the Anchorage police, the governor's office… anywhere I can think of, basically. Verdant Falls isn't really capable of solving a crime; Deputy Lawrence made that clear by accepting my ex's ludicrous story at face value.

Those girls are no doubt missed. Even if they were all party girls or hitchhikers, they still had people who loved them. Their families deserve to know what happens to them, and Jack should pay for what he's done.

As should the members of his pack who helped him. None of them are innocent or trustworthy. That's what weighs heavily on my mind as I pull off the road opposite the lake house, studying the driveway.

Two cars. One that I've seen Derrick drive around town.
