Spreckels Lake was one of Margaret’s favorite places in the city. She and Betty met up by the artificial lake when they could to dangle their feet in the water and watch the model boats float by.

The sky was clear, and the sunlight glinted off the water and the iridescent green feathers of the mallard ducks. But despite the beauty of the afternoon, Betty didn’t seem to be enjoying herself. Margaret’s usually outgoing friend was quiet and preoccupied.

“Is your family all right? In Germany?” Margaret asked.

“Hush,” Betty said. “They’re fine. I don’t want to talk about it.” She kicked her feet in the lake, splashing Margaret’s. “How’s your father?”

“He’s fine, just worried. Some of the people he knows are going on trial.”

“People from his country?”

“And some Germans, and some Irish too. Let’s not talk about it.”

“Right,” Betty agreed. There was an awkward silence for a moment. Margaret tried to figure out what they could talk about instead.

“Let’s see if we can spot a turtle,” she finally said. “I saw one last time I was here.”
