Elias and I don’t talk on the return trip to Fairfax.

Instead, he spends the time deep in thought, and so do I. And there’s more mental room to do that this round since he doesn’t barrel down the roads like Evel Knievel after nine shots of espresso. He still drives fast, but he must have other things on his mind now than speed.

Thea, of course.

She waltzes through my head, too, the image of her bringing more uninvited feels—these of the snarly, tangly, complicated sort.

I want to like her. I do like her. But . . . I also don’t.

I don’t dare explore why, even though, two guesses . . . So, I just pretend to check my phone for messages before doom-scrolling through social media instead.

Too bad no one’s problems are as bad as mine in their posts because—sorry, not sorry—that usually does give me a little boost.

Of course, I could pay it forward and return the favor.

And how would that post go?

Life update: Demons are for real. My dead best friend @HelenBurns is being sketch AF. There’s this ripped Italian dude poking at the carcass of my dating life, and just today, my defunct give-a-crap-o-meter got flipped to red by some Hamlet-talking widower who, in addition to being kind of damned, is super unavailable because he’s in love with an Edwardian skeleton.
