Chapter 10
I sat in the back with Ren, going over ammunition and weapons. I had six rounds left in my Ruger, plus two spare magazines. My Sig P226 MK25 was still holstered, with one in the pipe for 16 rounds in the pistol, plus two 15-round magazines in the holder under my opposite arm. I drew the pistol and checked the laser sight, making a bright red dot on the back of Flynnâs seat.
âDonât point that thing at me, dickhead,â she said without turning around.
âOh quit your whining, the safetyâs on,â I said, then checked to make sure I was right. It was going to take some getting used to, being around a woman who could see through my eyes if she tried hard enough. I holstered the Sig and checked my knives to make sure they were all accessible and sharp.
âYou look like youâre ready to take on a giant,â Ren said.
âI donât know what weâre getting into, but I have a feeling it wonât be pretty,â I replied.
âIt wonât. It seems that our friendly neighborhood Apocalypse cult has broken the second seal, and War is taking the form of a pissed-off motorcycle gang,â Smith said from the front seat.
âHuh?â I asked.
âThe local gang task force has been keeping an eye on the local Renegades MC for a while now, suspecting them of heading up a major meth distribution ring. Today they shot the surveillance detail and rode across town to burn down the clubhouse of a rival gang, the Devilâs Rejects. None of the Rejects survived, but one of our surveillance team made it out of the initial attack. She said they all followed a tall man driving a red Mustang convertible.â
âThe red horse,â I said.
âSlightly updated,â Smith agreed.
âSo where are they now?â Flynn asked from the passenger seat.
âThey went back to their clubhouse where they sealed themselves in tight and commenced to shooting anyone who walked within fifty yards of the place. Which is a problem because thereâs a daycare right across the street.â
âI assume itâs been evacuated?â I asked.
âCanât. We tried to get a van in there, but the Renegades are better armed than we expected. They hit our van with an RPG. We lost four officers.â
âSo we have a bunch of psycho bikers with rocket launchers led by a mystical embodiment of the spirit of War, and if we donât stop them, theyâll burn the city to the ground and usher in the end of the world, is that it?â I summed it up, as much for myself as anyone else.
âYeah, thatâs pretty much got it in a nutshell,â Smith agreed.
âFace impossible odds and save the world from certain destruction? Must be Tuesday,â I sighed, leaning back and resting my head against the SUVâs soft interior.
We pulled into a grocery store parking lot a couple football fields away from the clubhouse and got out of the Suburban. A uniform walked up to us and said, âI assume youâre the government assholes the captain said would be coming.
