THE DAY THE ferry was set to come back to get them—their last morning on Santa Inez Island—Wolf grabbed one of the hotel’s huge towels and headed out to find Christie. Jon hadn’t argued when he’d asked for some privacy . . . finally. As bone-melting as the sex in the gym had been, he wouldn’t have their last encounter involve her tied to a weight machine. Even if they did nothing more than talk, he’d hold her in his arms one last time. If she wanted more than that, fine. If not . . . at least they’d have a satisfying good-bye.

Debris littered the beach after the storm, but the sun and the ocean had returned to normal. A bird of prey soaring above released a high skreee as it coasted on the thermals. Palm fronds now waved gently as though stretching to ease the aches from the battering they’d received. Once the resort staff had cleaned things up, the island would return to tropical perfection. In a few months, not a sign of Fred or what had happened between the three of them would remain.

He came upon her suddenly. She sat under a lone palm not far from the shore, her back against the trunk and her knees pulled up under her chin. She stared out over the ocean, and for a moment, he could simply look at her. Her dark hair floated around her face, and when she pushed it back, he got a view of her soft lips. He knew their honey now and the way they parted to allow her to take puffs of breath when she became aroused. Her lush figure continued to pull a response from him. Even dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, her curves inspired lust. Would he never get enough of her?

She looked up and spotted him, and a smile curved her lips. “I thought you’d be packing.”

“Already done.”

“Good.” She went back to staring at the sea.

He went to her, spread out the towel, and sat down. For long moments, neither of them spoke, and the only sounds came from waves breaking on the shore. A constant rhythm. Predictable and completely opposite from the delicious chaos of the past few days.

“Everything settled between us?” she asked finally.

“As far as I’m concerned. How about you?”

She shrugged. “It’s hard to be angry after what we shared. Agreed?”

“Agreed.” He pushed a stray lock of her hair behind her ear. “You did enjoy what we did in the gym, didn’t you?”

She laughed. “You have to ask?”

“No, I guess not.” He sat for a moment. “There is one thing. We never got a chance to make love. Just the two of us.”

“I’d like that,” she said softly, although she didn’t make eye contact.

“Think this towel is big enough?”

She turned to him. “I hope so. Sand would make things—”

“Uncomfortable,” he finished.

This time, he didn’t rush things. He wasn’t going to walk around a kitchen, bouncing her against him as he fucked her. He wasn’t going to lie in wait in a dark restaurant, hoping she’d show up.
