Two older Latinos brought me to the Latino Caucus, then excluded me when they discovered I am of Guatemalan and Honduran descent, not Mexican American.

A native-born member of the Latino Caucus snidely remarked, “Oh god, the immigrants are here to save us,” when I suggested marketing more toward immigrants.

A white colleague sent me a job posting at another university, with the message, “I think this place is more like what you’re looking for” when I’d suggested organizing an event on conflict between groups in the workplace.
