Chapter Fifteen

I emerged in late afternoon and checked my cell phone. I had missed one call, from Lenny. I called him back.

“Erin told me. I can hardly believe it,” were the first words he said.

“I know.”

We were both quiet, struck by the enormity of what had happened.

After a moment, Lenny said, “Poor Galan and Erin. They only had one year together.”

“It was a year he wouldn’t have had without her,” I pointed out.

“I guess so. What’s weird to me is that Dagovar isn’t even a dark elf! I would have sensed that on him, and there was nothing. He’s just…bad.”

“You know what I wonder? Did he come here wanting to help and then was tempted by the money, or did he plan this all along?”

Lenny was silent for a moment. “I don’t see how he could have planned it. I mean, I was with Kutara when she spoke to elves. Yes, she said we were setting up an organization to help elvenkind, but I don’t remember her ever saying, ‘And we have an enormous sum of money to do it with!’”

I laughed, surprised I still could. “You’re a good elf, Lenny.”

“You, too. I guess I should contact the Kansas elves. Dagovar probably won’t show up there, but you never know.”

“And warn them about bonding to humans,” I reminded him.

“That too, although I don’t think that’s very likely. I’ve always gotten the impression they dislike humans even more than most elves do.”

“All right. I’ll talk to you later, okay?”

He sighed. “Who else are we going to talk to?”

After we hung up, I took a deep breath and called Mark.

“Adlia!” His voice was warm. “I was just thinking about you.”

Soon he would have to forget me. I closed my eyes, wishing I didn’t have to do this. “Are you at home? Can I come over?”

“Absolutely. I’ll make you dinner.”

“You don’t need to do that, but I’ll be right there.”

I would break up with Mark in person. I owed him one last lie.
