Chapter 7

Ventriloquism 101

Mary’s situation had incredibly gotten worse. She hadn’t thought that was possible, but she was now trapped in the Shadowlands sharing a body with Vicky. It made her want to dig into her skin and pull bits of herself out, hoping Vicky would be in the bit removed. She had to get over it though. Vicky was there to help her and she needed the help. She’d been spinning her wheels before. Sure, she’d been able to see what Tracy was doing, but she hadn’t been about to do anything about it.

“Tell me what’s happened.”

It felt so weird to have Vicky speak through her. She couldn’t get over how her mouth moved on its own. She could still feel her mouth and feel what it was doing, but she wasn’t controlling it at all. She didn’t know how to describe it. It wasn’t like when a ghost possessed her. She felt like a puppet then. The ghost had to force her limbs to do what they wanted. Vicky didn’t have to force anything. She just used her mouth like it was her own. “You started acting weird, which for anyone else would be acting normal. You dressed like a regular girl and smiled. It was very off-putting.”

Mary could imagine. She wondered what her friends had made of her changes. Had they noticed? From what she’d seen, it didn’t seem like it. She didn’t voice this thought though.

“Anyway, I knew something was up. You weren’t acting like yourself and I still couldn’t figure out why we’d needed you to rescue your cousin. You were completely useless during the trip.”

While Mary could agree that in hindsight her inclusion in Tracy’s rescue was very suspect, she resented the label of useless. “So what happened?”

“I got him to go looking for you. I tricked him a little to do it, but he didn’t see anything wrong with you. When he went looking, he got upset and started crying. He said his mind’s eye kept going to the dead tree. He knew what that meant because when he’d looked for Tracy, his mind’s eye had done the same thing. He was really upset. Poor guy.”

Hearing Jake’s reaction comforted Mary. She’d had a nasty fear that he’d been in on the whole plan.

“So then you two decided to come here and rescue me.”

“That was the plan.”

“And then what?”

“What do you mean?”

“Did you think I’d just kick Tracy out of my body?”

“Well, yeah.”

Mary didn’t think it was going to be that easy but held her tongue. She needed to focus on one thing at a time and the goal right now was getting out of the Shadowlands. Once she was out, she’d figure out how to get her body back.

“Where are you? Are you camping at the gate? Who’s watching over you?”

“We’re at your house. Your grandmother thinks the only reason we needed to be at the gate was so Tracy would be able to take you over more easily. Something about proximity. I didn’t really understand it.
