Understanding dawned. She had suspected for some time that Andy was fond of her. Was he trying to outdo McLeod and the clothes he had bought her? "But I have new clothes, sir," she began gently. “Ones provided for me by my . . . husband. Truly, they are more than adequate for my purposes. Thank you, Andrew, but I cannot accept such personal gifts from you. It would not be right.”

“What ye have isna grand enough at all,” Andy corrected her with rare earnestness. “After the evening service in the kirk Friday, there’s to be a ceilidh, ye see?”

"A kaylee?” she echoed.

"In the Gaelic it means a visit, aye? Everyone gathers 'round the fire and we all take a turn at singing or playing the fiddle, or maybe the pipes. You’ll see. It’s a braw bit o’ fun, my lady. Here, they welcome new arrivals and celebrate safe voyages by holding a ceilidh. You’ll want to look your best for the dancin’, aye? All the lassies will,” he added, shooting her a pointed look.

She understood immediately. Andy, bless him, was quite unaware of the offer McLeod had made her and the agreement they had made to go their separate ways.
