Chapter 10

“So, you ready to talk yet?” Brecken asked once we hit the freeway. We had both stopped laughing, and he had waited until I was relaxed before he asked me the questions I had been avoiding for a day now.

“Sure. Why not?” I wasn’t going to verbalize all the reasons going through my mind on why I didn’t want to have this conversation. Playing it cool.

“I did come here for the case.”

Really? That was where he wanted to start?

“Wow, Brecken. You really know how to woo a girl.”

“Can you stop interrupting me to be snarky?”

“I think you know that answer by now.” I glanced over at him with a head shake. “I would if I could, but I can’t, so I shan’t.”

“I didn’t pin you as a Big Bang Theory fan.”

“Just because I don’t have a college degree doesn’t mean I’m dumb.” I threw a flat look at him to let him know my thoughts on that.

“I’m starting to see that.”

“Starting?” I couldn’t stop my voice getting higher as I said it. Wherever this conversation was going, it wasn’t getting there well.

“Turn of phrase?” he offered, wincing at my angry expression.

“When was that wooing starting? Because I’m feeling substantially less inclined.”

“I was kind of hoping we were over the wooing portion of this. You know, after the kiss and all.” His eyes were kind of wide by the end of his statement.

Were we? Was I okay with that?

“Nope.”

“Nope?”

“Nope, I need more wooing.”

“What, exactly, constitutes wooing? I haven't brushed up on my old-time courting techniques recently.”

I glared at him but had to stop and think about that. What did I want? I couldn’t recall any man asking me that before. What I wanted out of a relationship. It completely flummoxed me.

“Dates,” I finally offered. “Texting. Every day. Ooh and a ‘good morning’ text every morning. I had a roommate once whose boyfriend did that. It was so romantic.” I looked over at him to see how he took that, only to find him just staring at me. Then it hit me. “You were joking, weren't you?” Well, that was disappointing.

“I was, but I’m finding that I like having a list. Lists are good. I can do lists.” He was nodding over and over as he pulled out his phone and looked at me again. “Text messages every morning and dates. Got it. What else?”

He was serious. Was I?

Oh god. I was. I was going to do this.

“Status. I don’t like being up in the air, or not knowing what I am, or who I am to you… or, really, anything. I like knowing things.”

“Nosy. Got it.”

I stuck my tongue out at him, but continued my list anyway. “I want to keep dating other people, too. Until…” I knew he wasn’t going to disappear. I couldn’t say that. Could I? I glanced over at him and then back to the road.

“Until you know I’m sticking around.” He grimaced before looking away. “I should explain that.”

Yeah, that would be a good idea.

“Only if you want to,” I lied.
