THE PORCH was silent and tension hung over the house so thick, Bret thought he would suffocate. Big Daddy was stone-faced, and Margaret had her hand over her mouth in shock. It was Timmy who moved first, his large body graceful as he walked around his mother and headed down the stairs. Bret swallowed down his fear as he watched him come down.

“What are you doing, son?” Big Daddy asked as he stood up, but it was too late. Timmy grabbed Bret by the arms and held him fast, his hands digging into Bret’s biceps as his jaw worked.

“We were right all along, Bret,” he said, nodding as tears surfaced on his handsome face.

“Timmy…,” Bret said, but the big man shook his head and wandered past them before he turned and screamed to everyone and no one.

“We were right!” he sobbed.

Molly, who had been in the house before, had stepped out halfway through the conversation and now waddled down the steps, calling for her boyfriend. Timmy turned away from her, but she went around him and wrapped her arms around his big frame as he wept.

Margaret and Big Daddy just stood there holding each other on the porch.

Bret looked at Jeff, who stared at the ground in uncomfortable silence, then walked over to him and placed a hand on his arm. Jeff favored him with a sorrowful gaze that spoke a thousand words. He hated doing this, and Bret simply nodded and rubbed his back to give the messenger comfort.

Timmy cried for a good while but eventually returned with his Molly on his arm, and the two sat in front of Bret and Jeff like parishioners hearing the words of a prophet.

“You knew about this, Bret? I mean, you always suspected, but why didn’t you tell us?” Molly asked, her eyes puffy and red rimmed. Bret’s heart broke for her, and he shook his head.

“Not until after the first episode I had on the porch. After you left the hospital, that is when Jeff walked into my room and we met,” Bret replied, shamefaced, and Margaret turned her attention from Bret to Jeff.

“What do you need, Agent McAllister?” she whispered.

“This doesn’t have to happen tonight, ma’am. I can come back in the morning if it would be better,” Jeff said, but Big Daddy was already shaking his head no.

“No one will sleep tonight anyway, Jeff. You may as well get this over with,” he said, lighting the end of his pipe.

“We’ve told you about Adam to lead into more news,” Bret said, and Jeff’s eyes widened.

Everyone’s attention shifted to him.

Bret figured Jeff had already taken enough heat. “Three people have been murdered here in Promise. Sherriff Townsend, the drunk who used to hang out at Moe’s liquor, and tonight it was the pastor of First Baptist,” Bret said.

“Pastor Dennis?” Margaret gasped.

Bret nodded.

“I don’t understand,” Molly said, speaking up.

Bret’s mouth worked, but no sound came out. He felt like he was suddenly struck dumb.

“Adam was murdered by more than one person,” Big Daddy said calmly.
