I meet Enzo at a cafe within walking distance of the police station. It's a small space with brick interior walls and gray slate flooring. Ten round, bar-height tables, each with two chairs, fill the space.
He's seated by the front windows and reading the menu. I sit across from him, and he smiles without looking up.
"So Ma got you good?" he asks with a chuckle.
I glance down to his phone sitting near a glass of ice water. "You called her?"
"No, she called me. She's so proudâshe's bragging."
I shake my head and grin. If it were Enzo or Izzie, I'd be annoyed they won a round and would be plotting my revenge. But I won't try to get Ma back.
"You think she and Pop are out of the scaring business, and the next thing you know, you're screaming," I say.
Enzo laughs and nods. It lightens his face. Normally, my brother has permanent serious face. I can never tell if he's upset, angry, content, or hungry. Well, with the last one there's usually a fork or plate in his hand. It's nice to see him smile and enjoy life.
The waitress comes over, and I haven't looked at the menu yet. I pick it up and quickly scan it. I've been here a few times, not enough to know it by heart but enough to remember this fantastic sandwich I had the last time. There it is, the fifth one listed.
Enzo orders a Cuban sandwich, an order of fries, and a side salad. That man can eat.
"I'll have the chipotle chicken and avocado sandwich," I say.
As the server walks off, I fold my hands on my place mat and ask, "So why am I deserving of lunch?"
He glances around to see if anyone is listening, but the tables closest to us are empty. "I looked into the evidence, and there was no phone."
"Seriously? That's good. But puzzling. But good."
He sips his water.
That's it?
"You could've told me that over the phone," I say.
He shrugs. "I'm hungry, and there are too many ears at the station. Kevin's been watching me oddly lately."
"You too?"
I can sense Enzo's defenses rising as his eyebrows inch up his face.
"What do you mean?" he asks.
"I can't place it, but he seems almost human to me lately. Like he no longer hates me and doesn't want to purposely press my buttons."
Enzo's frown is deep. See, even he's confused. "But he loves annoying you off."
"And vice versa. Maybe he's preoccupied with something else."
Enzo shrugs. "If he is, I haven't heard a word. It could be personal. Something to do with his marriage."
Considering I think his nuptials were oddly timed, that wouldn't surprise me. He and my exâbest friend married the week I returned home from living in Connecticut.
I shake my head to release all thoughts about my arch nemesis. "Forget him. Let's talk about something else."
"Why is this phone important?" Enzo whispers.
There may be too many ears at the precinct, but it's not like we can openly discuss a murder investigation in a public cafe either.
