The voluntary choice to simplify our lives thus has a long history in spiritual practice both in the East and the West. On the one hand, simplicity can be a practice that supports our spiritual growth and helps create the conditions in which we can deepen into Divine Being. On the other hand, it can be a fruit of this deepening, expressing and carrying forward changes that have happened in us either by sheer grace or by graced rescue from the calamities of trying to live while “sleep-walking.” Wherever simplicity first begins, a preference for it often comes linked together with spiritual growth in a self-reinforcing cycle that grows stronger as it spins itself into realisation.
