Etta lay on her side, Brody spooned up against her, softly snoring in her ear. She knew he was worried about Hobson and his men and knew he thought he was doing everything he could, but she figured he didn’t know mustangs the way she did and he sure as hell didn’t know Timer. Etta had seen Timer instinctively lead other herds towards safety. She was counting on his instincts today, too.

Removing Brody’s arm from around her midsection, Etta quietly slipped out of the bed. Her body was more than a little sore from Brody. Not only did her ass hurt like hell, but her most feminine parts were aching, both from lack of use prior to last night and Brody’s demanding lovemaking last night and this morning. She had to admit, though, that he’d been right. When she woke up the first time this morning, she had vaguely smelled of Brody and sex. Now it was unmistakable that she’d been well used by him.

She grabbed all of her clothing from the night before except her panties. She couldn’t see them and didn’t want to take the time or risk waking Brody to find them before she could make her escape. She made her way through the kitchen, grabbing Brody’s cell phone as well as pilfering money from his wallet to pay for a cab. Once she had the door to the mudroom closed, she used Brody’s cell phone to call a cab.

While waiting for the cab, she got back into her clothes. She hoped that he’d sleep long enough to give her time to get back to the ranch, grab a horse and head out. Etta was quite certain he was no fool and would immediately head to the ranch to try and stop her. She also had no illusions about how angry he was going to be. And that when he caught up with her the pain currently residing in her backside would be incomparable to how it would feel after he was done with her. But so be it—Timer needed her, and she would not fail him.

Etta found the cabbie agreeable to bending the rules of the road to get her home more quickly if it meant a handsome tip when he collected his fare. Not wanting to alert anyone that might be out and about at the ranch, she had the cab drop her off part way down the drive. She slipped through the front pasture and into the barn, avoiding any direct line of sight to the house. She was glad to see one of her now retired geldings in the barn, munching the last of his hay, and went to tack him up. She had the horse ready to go and was coming out of the tack room for the last time, busy loading a rifle, when she almost collided with Jo.

“And just what do you think you’re going to do with that?” her aunt asked.

“I’m going after Timer. I have a pretty good idea where they might be or at least might be headed.
