Twenty-One

BENNY JUMPED OFF THE stifling crowded bus when the doors opened at their stop. Making her way to the house, she used every inch of her long stride to keep ahead of Evelina. She marched inside the house, going directly to her room, closing the door, and locking it behind her. Evelina was in the hallway pressing against the door, still begging to be let inside while trying not to wake her parents. She wanted to talk, but Benny had nothing to say.

To mitigate the damages, Benny tried her best to stay at an arm’s distance but Evelina just had to push things. For the escape plan to work there could be no emotion involved. No romance, not even a slight bit of caring. The problem was, no matter how much she denied it, she did care about Evelina. It was impossible not to feel anything for Evelina after months of conversations filled with confessions concerning her family, job, dreams, worries about her sexuality, and many other personal subjects.

Evelina trusted Darby, and Benny had to admit, her trust had been misplaced. To make up for it, Benny wanted to at least be partially honest, even though it could all backfire and ruin her escape plan. The misplaced trust was the reason Benny tried not to do anything that might make the situation harder for Evelina when she left. She even let her believe, for a little while, things might happen between them. Apparently, she had let her think those thoughts for much too long.

She appreciated Evelina and everything she had done, from selling the jewels to giving her a place to stay. In return, she left Evelina money in the bank account and tried to take her out to meet real friends at a club. However, she was aware the only way to show real appreciation was to leave her life as intact as possible. She understood now, Evelina had become fully invested. Benny needed to change her plans, quickly.

Benny looked around the room for a moment as she contemplated her options and made her decision. She had to accelerate her escape plan. It would be fine to leave sooner. She had to accept leaving the jewels still at the brokers to Evelina. Also, selling jewels in Italy had to stop for a while. That part of the plan could resume in Greece or Sweden, or wherever was easiest to travel to on her motorcycle.

Benny opened her briefcase and shifted through the papers, unsure if she should take the chance and use her real passport, or keep using the one for Darby. She wished now she had brought documents for more aliases.

Darby would have to disappear sooner than planned in case Evelina figured everything out and decided to turn her into the authorities. She wanted to avoid a stay in an Italian jail or deportation as a criminal. She had worked too hard all these years to ensure her true identity was a secret.

She slammed the briefcase closed. Damnit! Why
