As Dave and Mack walked to meet James and Anna outside the courtroom, John Grant approached them.

“Ms. Wilson, can I have a moment of your time?” he asked.

Mack waved Dave on ahead, and the two lawyers stepped into the small workroom between the courtroom and the hallway.

Grant tossed his briefcase onto the table, trying for an air of nonchalance and instead looking like a cornered rodent. “He’ll take twenty-five,” Grant said.

“John,” Mack replied, having expected something like this in the event that the severance hearing was unsuccessful, “the offer is fifty.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

Grant rolled his eyes and huffed. “Come on, Mack, if he takes fifty he’s guaranteed to die in prison. Twenty-five gives him a shot.”

“Somehow,” Mack said, smiling, “the thought of your client dying in prison doesn’t really bother me. He doesn’t deserve a shot, and he won’t get one from me.”

“You’d rather put those kids on the stand?” he asked. “Robert and I will tear them apart.”

“Robert knows better,” Mack said, “and if you think a jury won’t hate you for yelling at a kid, you’re delusional.”

Grant glared at her.

“The fifty offer expires next week,” Mack said. “Then it goes up to sixty.”

She left Grant in the room, still spluttering, and joined the others outside for the walk back to the office.

“He’ll take twenty-five,” Mack said to James.

James smiled. “I’m sure he would. He’d only be seventy-eight when he got out of prison.”

“If we wait here, can we meet Jeannie?” Anna asked.

“I don’t know,” Mack said, grabbing the other woman’s elbow to hurry her down the hall, “and I cannot care. Come on, Doc, you’re supposed to take me to dinner, and I am starving.”
