Use of Semi-attached Figures - Correlational Statistics

The last bit that I want to talk about here is the use of a semi-attached figure. It doesn't require much but I believed that it deserved its own section. A semi-attached figure is a figure of a number that's misleading due to some key information that is missing. In other words, it is statistic that's related to the situation but doesn't actually prove anything.

Therefore, let's say that we have a bunch of white nationalists that like the My Little Pony series. We could then show a graph that shows the amount of time that white nationalists spend on series like My Little Pony. We then write an article or an academic paper suggesting that those who watch series like My Little Pony are highly likely to be white nationalists. This is not true, which is why it is known as a semi-attached figure. While it is true that a bunch of white nationalists do like My Little Pony, not all adults are white nationalists and not all the adults that watch My Little Pony are either. They may even just be parents of kids who watch the show. However, I've used the statistic to incorrectly prove that adults who watch My Little Pony are white nationalists (which isn’t true).
