These processes effectively constitute an extra resistance in the circuit. We refer to this as the internal resistance, r, of the cell.

When a cell provides a circuit with current, the magnitude of the current is the same through the circuit and the electrolyte and between the electrolyte and the electrodes within the cell. We model the cell as an ideal source providing a potential difference of VEMF, in series with an internal resistance, r (Figure 3.25). When the cell is connected to an external resistance R, a current i flows. We can now apply the principle of conservation of energy to this circuit:
