Well, folks, outs two and three came quickly

as Vic Harris struck out and shortstop Dick Lundy

hit a comebacker to an alert Chet

Brewer, who made a great grab to get

out number three for the hard-working West.

Bottom of the 5th Inning

Due Up:

Sam Bankhead

Larry Brown, C (Chi. Amer. Giants)

Sammy Hughes, 2B (Nash. E. Giants)

We begin the bottom of the fifth, moving swift.

Tin Can on the hill gave up one hit

to Sam Bankhead, who singled past third to get on,

but an attempt to steal second was stopped by Josh

Gibson.

The hard throw from Josh sat Bankhead down,

allowing Tin Can to focus on Larry Brown.

Brown steps out of the box, then slowly back in

and directs his eyes to Tin Can, who begins

his windup and uncoils a tightly wound whip

that cracks toward Brown, who slaps a chip

shot over the head of Oscar Charleston toward right,

earning a single to this crowd’s delight.

Tin Can shakes it off by turning his eyes

to the next batter and sending a fastball that flies

right past the letters on Sammy Hughes’s chest,

now heaving, so he will take a brief moment’s rest

by kicking his cleats before digging back in.

Hughes connects on a pitch that is caught by

Charleston,

making out number two with one out left,

bringing up the number nine hitter, Chet

Brewer, the pitcher, who stares at strike one

as Brown bounces on first, hoping to run.

Here comes pitch two, and Chet softly connects

on a slow roller to second that Chester Williams gets

and throws to Charleston for out number three,

effectively ending the West’s rally.

The West had two chances at scoring a run,

but Tin Can squeaked by and the inning is now

done.
