CHAPTER 23

Echoing voices and sounds.

Darkness.

Some images out of focus.

Flashes of light.

Pain.

“This one is recovering consciousness too,” yelled a female voice next to her, with an unfamiliar, strong accent.

She felt some pressure on her wrist – pain! She instinctively pulled her arm back.

“Easy, easy. Calm down,” said the same voice with a soothing tone, “let me handle this. This is the first time that I’m treating burns and frostbites at the same time, on the same person.” Then, in a whisper, she added, “Just unbelievable…”

Laura could finally open her eyes wide enough to put images into focus.

Julia was next to her, sitting on another stretcher. Part of her face, arms and hands were covered with bandages. She gave her a weak smile.

“It seems that she’s ok, more or less,” said the woman with the strong accent, who Laura could now see was wearing a paramedic uniform and who was now checking her blood pressure, “despite everything,” she added.

“Yes, it seems so,” echoed a man also in a paramedic uniform, who was attending Sergei on another stretcher. “I’m sure there’s no clinical record, anywhere, of such an odd mix of injuries.”

Sergei slowly turned to Laura. “We made it,” he said with a feeble voice.

“Yes, we made it,” echoed Julia, “and thanks to you, Laura. We owe you our lives.”

Laura tried to smile. She looked around and saw that they were now outside the main SPACEWAVE building. The flashing lights were coming from four ambulances parked next to them, and several police cars. There were policemen, paramedics and other people clustered in another area, not far from them.

As she was brought to the ambulance, she saw several other police cars and ambulances sped by at a distance, with their flashing lights on. Strangely, they passed on the grounds just outside the fenced area, reached the asphalted road and then disappeared in the direction of the city.
