Lina spun around to see a man standing in the side door. He wore an olive-green uniform and smirked triumphantly at her from beneath a hat. His grin showed the metal teeth of his robotic jaw.
âHello, Lina,â growled Captain Korda of the Imperial Navy. âHow nice to finally make your acquaintance. Your mother has told me so much about you.â
Lina stared at Dil in disbelief. âHow could you?â
The traitor stared at his desk, shaking his head. âIâm sorry,â he muttered weakly. But Lina didnât wait to hear any more. She spun around, ready to run back out into the hallway, but her path was blocked by a pair of stormtroopers. They aimed their blasters right at her, ready to fire.
Morq cried out in panic and leapt from her shoulders. One of the stormtroopers turned and fired. The blaster sounded like thunder in the confines of Dilâs office. The bolt hit the floor, but Morq was too fast. He crashed past the blinds, escaping through the open window. The trooper moved to go after him but stopped at the wave of Kordaâs gloved hand.
âThat creature isnât important,â the captain drawled. âAll I want is the data.â
He stalked forward. Lina backed away as he moved closer.
âShe hasnât got it,â Dil said quickly. âD-donât hurt her.â
The captain turned his head to look at the Sullustan. âHurt her? Why on Coruscant would I do that?â
âI canât believe you would sell us out!â Lina spat at Dil. âWeâve known you since we were babies.â
Dil still didnât meet her gaze. âThey threatened me, Lina. I was scared. Iâveâ¦Iâve done some things in the past that Iâm not proud of, before I met your parents. Your mom and dad straightened me out, butââ
âBut his past crimes have come back to haunt him,â Korda cut in. âIt was a simple choiceâbetray you or spend the rest of his days mining carbonite in a Kalaan prison camp. Donât be too hard on him. He took all of two seconds to decide.â
Korda took a step closer and Lina bumped up against the wall. There was nowhere else to go.
The captain loomed over her. âThere is nothing to be afraid of. As I told your parents, the Empire wishes to bring peace and order to Wild Space. To do so, we require their maps. Itâs really quite simple.â
âThen why did you arrest them?â Lina blurted out.
Kordaâs wolfish smile evaporated. âYour mother only gave me part of the dataâmaps of useless rocks. I thought Pexton might have the restâhow fortunate that youâre still alive. I trust youâd like to stay that way.â
Behind him, Dil stepped forward.
âCaptain, please,â Dil begged. âSheâs just a kid.â
Korda silenced the Sullustan with a single glare. âSheâs a criminal, like yourself.â
Lina tried not to cry as Korda raised a gloved hand and lifted her chin so that she looked straight into his icy blue eyes. âNow tell me. Where are those maps?â
