Thirty

Stunned, I returned home.

My eye had turned red. Magnolia was so vicious, pure hatred reflected in her eyes. I’d never experienced such rage from someone before, not since Mother. I needed to talk to someone, and there was only one person I could think of who’d pick up.

I popped a Monolopin and called Pria. Maybe I could lie about going to rehab long enough for her to listen.

“Hello,” she said, cold and to the point.

“Pria, I’m so happy you answered.”

“I debated whether I should. Have you thought about what I said in my message?”

Pria with the power now. I hated how she lorded it over me.

“Yes. I realize I have a problem. I’m struggling.”

“Oh, oh, Lexi, I’m so glad. Do you want me to make a reservation—”

“Can you just listen? I need—I’m not sure what I’ll do to myself.”

“Okay, okay, tell me what happened.”

I went through the whole ordeal. How Magnolia turned on me with such vengeance, I barely recognized her as the goddess who once graced my screen.

“But Lexi, who is she really?”

“She’s on Socialites. She’s a…socialite…and an Instagram influencer. She hangs out on yachts and—”

“So what? Think about it. All those things are meaningless. How do they really affect your life?”

“Because it’s exactly what I want to be.”

She sighed. “She’s a vapid reality TV star. All they do is drink too much, take too many selfies, and rip off each other’s wigs. There are people who have real jobs, who make important contributions to society.”

“Magnolia would never wear a wig. Extensions, yes, but—”

“That’s not the point. Women are working to cure diseases. Stop hunger. Save the environment. These are heroines you should place on a pedestal, not some rich waste of space.”

I was offended to hear Magnolia spoken of in that way, even after all she did. For if I worshipped a waste of space, what did that say about me?

“Pria, she’ll post and get a hundred thousand likes.”

“Great, she’s good at getting morons to push a button.”

“These followers love her. They comment on everything she says. They are a part of her life.”

“No, they’re not. They’re wasting time, it’s all a waste of time. This woman, this Socialite, has hoodwinked you like a cult leader would. You follow every asinine thing she does ad nauseum instead of living your own life. It’s all a distraction. Quit the TV, quit the pills and booze, and get yourself together because I’m afraid of what will happen.”

My voice got shaky. “What will happen?”

“You could die. And I’m not being overdramatic. People overdose from a lot less than you consume on a daily basis. And then it’s over and I’ve done everything I can to help you—this is all your mother’s fault.”

“What?”

“You learned from watching her. Pilled out with the remote in her hand for decades. She never showed you love.”

“She did in her own ways.”

“How? By slapping you across the face? She’s a terror.”

“She’s the only mother I have.”

“I know. And I know it’s hard to hear this, but it’s coming from a place of tough love.
