Gary skated past us. He made a good show of not watching Nicole, but I knew better.

One cool move Nicole did was skate with one skate in front of

the other as if she were walking on a tightrope, yet the direction of her motion changed so she skated on a curve.

“Wicked!” I said as I rolled up to her.

“That’s called ‘walking the curve,’” she informed me.

“I can’t do that,” remarked Cathy as she skated beside me.

“Me, neither.” I shook my head.

“I’ve been skating since I was three years old. I kinda want

to go pro someday.” Nicole skated backwards as she spoke to us.

“There’s professional roller-skating?” I asked.

“Oh yeah. It’s not that different from competitive ice skating.” She looked over her shoulder as she continued to skate backwards. “It has a lot of the same jumps and spins.”

Nicole spun around to face forward. She stretched one leg straight out behind her like a ballerina, her body straight, and her arms out like wings. “This is a spiral and you see it all the time with figure skaters.”

She straightened and did a little hop with a twist in the air so she faced us while skating backwards again, leg extended out behind her a bit. “That’s a waltz jump.”

“You’re amazing at this,” I gushed. “I bet you could go pro.”

Nicole spun around again, then smiled. “Thank you, I hope so.”

“Hey, I gotta go to the bathroom. Be right back,” Cathy announced

suddenly. She waved as she skated away from us.

Nicole frowned slightly all of a sudden, looking off into the distance. “Mom’s waving at me to go over there. I guess she needs me to help her with something. Alva probably ate the whole cake in ten seconds behind their back or something.” She glanced at me. “Do you mind?”

I shook my head. “No, go help your mom.” She zoomed off toward the concession stand.

A couple of minutes later, something knocked the back wheel of my skate. I stumbled, my arms flailing about like a cartoon character, trying but failing to stop myself. I crashed down hard on my knee. The pain radiated all up and down my leg. I took deep breaths to keep from crying.

“Tsk, tsk, what a klutz!” Brad sneered as he skated by me.

“Oops!” Alex chirped as he passed. “What’d ya do, slip on some vomit?” Kevin leered at me as he followed his fellow beasties.

“Gee, can you be any clumsier?” Josie remarked nastily as she sauntered by me on her skates. Tracy giggled at me as usual. Dani followed in silence after them, shooting me a concerned look, but she didn’t stop.

I scowled after them all as I sat there for a minute, breathing hard and rubbing my knee.

A hand appeared in front of my face. “Hey, Celeste. You need help?”

The hand belonged to Sean. He wore a blue Izod alligator polo shirt and khaki pants. His thick brown hair had been combed so it was less tousled and looked extra soft and shiny under the lights. Despite my predicament, I couldn’t help but notice how nice he looked.
