Chapter 6

The door shut. Was she inside the room?

“Where did he go?” she asked in a much nicer voice, just feet away from me.

He? She thought I looked like a he? If I wasn’t so terrified of being discovered, I would have been annoyed. Then the girl came into view and I almost died of a heart attack. Good thing I was totally squished between the file cabinet and the wall, or I’m sure I would have sagged to the floor. She hadn’t seen me yet though; her back was to me as she peered into the bathroom, still looking for him. And wonder of wonders, when she was satisfied the bathroom was empty, she moved away without looking in my direction. Oh. My. Gosh.

The chair scraped back. Was she sitting down now, making herself comfortable? Maybe she was settling in for a long session of paperwork. But she’d seemed too young to be doing a lot of that kind of stuff, only around nine or ten years old.

“He’s getting so sloppy, isn’t he, Frisky?” The bottom file cabinet door, the one I’d left open, slammed shut and the cold metal of the cabinet’s side shuddered against my body. But I didn’t care. I’d just realized two important things. The he wasn’t me. It was someone else, someone the girl knew who was apparently getting sloppy and she didn’t like it. And second, there were two people in the room, this girl and someone named Frisky. Or hopefully Frisky was another person. The name sounded suspiciously like a dog’s.

Please, not a dog, I thought, closing my eyes. And if you are a dog, please, please, please, just ignore me.

“I mean look at these saddles. They’re all dusty.”

Then to my horror, I heard snuffling. I lowered my gaze without lowering my head to see the floppiest looking dog imaginable shoving his muzzle into my narrow space. His shiny black nose sniffed at my shoe. I wiggled my foot at him, hoping to shoo him away, and a low growl rumbled in his throat. I froze. The rumbling stopped.

“Come here, Frisky,” the girl said.

Maybe she thought he was clearing his throat.

“We have to find Josh before Grandmother comes in here. If she sees this tack room, he’s history.” The door opened.

Frisky didn’t move.

“Come, Frisky.”

Frisky looked at her, undecided. I held my breath, knowing if I moved a muscle that he’d be growling again. That was one good thing about being squished like peanut butter between two slices of bread. I couldn’t tremble.

“Okay, I know what you want. Treats first and then we’ll go find Josh.”

I heard the door being shut and the sound of something else being opened. Frisky disappeared in a flash.

“Wow, you’ve been eating lots of treats. The bin’s only half full.”

A whine.

“Okay, just one then.”

Some chewing noises crunched toward me, and then I don’t know what the girl was doing but she took a long time to open the door again. By the time she shut the door behind them, my body was complete jelly.
