SCENE FOUR

A hayloft.

(MELCHIOR is lying on his back in the fresh hay. WENDLA comes up the ladder.)

WENDLA: This is where you’ve been hiding?—Everyone’s looking for you. The wagon’s gone back out again. You have to help. There’s a storm coming up.

MELCHIOR: Get away from me!—Get away from me!

WENDLA: What’s wrong?—What are you hiding your face for?

MELCHIOR: Go away, go away!—I’m going to throw you down the ladder.

WENDLA: In that case I’m definitely not going.—(drops to her knees by him) Why won’t you come out in the field with us, Melchior?—It’s dark and muggy in here. What do we care if we get soaked to the skin!

MELCHIOR: The hay has such a wonderful smell.—The sky out there must be as black as the cloth on a coffin.—All I can see is the glowing poppy on your breast—and I can hear your heart beating—

WENDLA:—Don’t kiss me, Melchior!—Don’t kiss me!

MELCHIOR:—I can hear your heart—beating—

WENDLA:—People love each other—if they kiss———Don’t, don’t——

MELCHIOR: Oh, believe me, there’s no such thing as love!—There’s only selfishness, only ego!—I love you as little as you love me.—

WENDLA:——Don’t—————————Don’t, Melchior!——

MELCHIOR:———Wendla!

WENDLA: Oh, Melchior!———————don’t——don’t——
