The Obsession Pt. 3

I found him and pressed play. This was it. Though the other stories were amazing, I needed this one. This last story, I don’t know why, but this was the one. The story that I needed to finish. After The Obsession, I could be done. Finally finished, I could leave the man in the red polo shirt behind for good. Live my own life again without wondering what was next, without getting another new idea to haunt me through my next couple of work days.

The man was right; lies really were beautiful.

“It was snowing hard, as hard as the night I first found her. The air was sharp as the snow cut my skin. This time was worse, though. I want to say it was the Euphoria, making the cold colder, but I think I knew. Somehow, I knew.

“The night went from its beautiful blood red to a dark purple before the clouds rolled in and turned the sky into its generic grey. The snow began to coat New York as my breath grew vibrant in the cold. I watched as the snow touched the ground, lingered for a moment, then vanished forever. That one snowflake, never to be seen again.

“I was in nothing but a sweatshirt as a response to the urgency she called me with. I was on my way to the theater she had once performed at before she had made it big with her group. That was a long time ago, a year, to be exact.

“I saw her in a bright white down coat with fur coating the hood’s rim. She stood under a street lamp that revealed the sparkles of snow and illuminated her breath. She stood without an arch in her back as she stared off into the distance, unaware that I was making my way to her.

“I walked up next to her and placed my hand on her shoulder to tell her I was here, but she made no response. Her breathing was sharp and quick. There would be moments where there wasn’t a sound other than a low hum from the back of her throat. She was crying.

“I placed myself in her unshifting view as she wept. I stole her ice-cold hands from her pockets. There was something else in there, but I bore it no mind. I looked to her perfect, glacial blue eyes, yet they were still white despite the tears.

“I opened my mouth, hesitating to ask what was wrong before pulling her right hand away and producing my two-thirds full bag of Euphoria. I stopped, my mind frozen in thought. ‘Is this yours?’ she asked me in a voice I couldn’t understand. It was painful to me. It hurt.

“‘Is it yours?!’ she repeated herself, but I couldn’t say a word. ‘You know,’ she said, turning toward me and finally meeting my eyes, ‘I thought you loved me.’ I opened my mouth to protest, but she wouldn’t let me. ‘Don’t you dare tell me another lie.’

“I waited and thought about my words carefully.
