“What are you doing sneaking around out here?” Joe demanded.
“None of your beeswax.” Adam sneered. “It’s a free country—I can walk wherever I want.”
“Yeah, so can we,” Frank said. “And we’re walking away from you.”
Frank hurried down the trail with Joe right behind him. Joe looked back a couple of times, but Adam didn’t try to follow them.
“Do you think he was spying on us?” Joe asked.
Frank smiled. “Now you sound like Chet. Anyway, it doesn’t matter if Adam heard us talking. He can’t be the bad guy this time, remember? He has an airtight alibi.”
“I wish we had some good suspects,” Joe said as he and Frank climbed off the bus the next morning. “We only have until the end of today to solve the case.”
They went into the school building. A bunch of kids nearby were laughing and high-fiving.
“What’s going on?” Joe asked them.
“Field Day’s back on!” one of the kids exclaimed.
Just then Phil came rushing toward them. He didn’t look as happy as the others. In fact, he was frowning.
“What’s wrong?” Joe asked. “Didn’t you hear the good news? Field Day’s back on!”
“Yeah,” Frank said. “I guess someone confessed.”
“Not exactly,” Phil said grimly. “But Ms. Butler thinks she knows who did it.”
“Really? Who?” Joe asked.
“Chet.”
