Chapter 13: Friends and Enemies

Fortunately, Zorbra and this thug had unhitched the Mercedes before running off, so I powered up the engine (though there was a bit of sluggish resistance, like the ring wasn’t fully functional) and bounced over the rutted dirt until we came to a gravel road.

“Which way?” Micah asked.

“No idea,” I replied. “We’ll just pick one and hope we don’t run into Zorbra.”

“Yep, literally.”

So, we turned left. It was so dark that we would see approaching headlights coming a long way off, so I laid on the speed. I kept the headlights of the big Mercedes off. The ring let me see well enough in this light, and there wasn’t any need to advertise where we were. I noticed Micah was rubbing her stomach with her hands and remembered the kick that Thompkin had given her.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I asked, concerned. She may have been sneaky enough to steal a ring, but that didn’t help with kicks to the gut, and though she had a hard-boiled attitude, she was still pretty small. She nodded and smiled.

“Oh yeah, I’ll be right as rain once this is over. I’ve had worse.” I frowned, not sure of how to reply. She turned to look over the fields rushing by.

“I heard what Zorbra said about Charles,” she said. My mood dropped as I remembered Zorbra’s face as he explained the curse of the ring and anger started bubbling someplace in my head. “What are you going to do?”

“When I find out where we are, I’m going to find a place to pull over and have a chat with him about it. I don’t expect it to go well.”

“Yeah, well, I suppose that since there are confessions going on, I’d better add mine to the pile.”

My shoulders slumped, and it felt like I had a fifty pound sack on my neck. “What?”

She reached out and touched my arm. “Oh no, it’s nothing horrible, I guess. It’s just something that, well, it could complicate things with Charles.”

“Like how?”

“Like my last name. It’s Pallentine.”

I slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a skidding, gravel-throwing stop.

“What?? Holy Christ, what are you saying? You two are….what…related?” I twisted my head around to look at her face. When I saw her expression, my stomach flopped. Now that I was looking for it, I could almost see a resemblance between them in her chin and the shape of her eyes. She looked at her lap.

“Look, he died when I was four, okay? I never really knew him at all. I don’t really want to know him. To me, he’s just some creep who went off, got killed, and left his wife and daughter to pick up the pieces.” She tilted her face so it was turned away from me, in shadow. “Mom, though, she’s different, she’s still crazy for him, I guess. Instead of accepting that he was gone, she spent all of the money hiring every witch and psychic in the book trying to find him.
