Chapter thirteen

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for the end of season get together; there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and as if to make up for the shitty weather of the past few days, the sun was shining brightly and throwing off summer-esque heat.

Bodhi and Dalton had picked her and Jess up an hour earlier, but since arriving at the stadium, Jess had hardly spoken to her. It was, after all, hard to talk to someone who was more interested in mingling with the single men on the team. Not that Carrie minded, it was nice to see Jess—ever the social butterfly—doing her thing.

A bouncy castle had been inflated down one end of the field and it was covered with children; she’d expected a gathering of rugby league players to be loud but hadn’t thought the noise would be courtesy of all the kids in attendance.

As she took a look around the field, it struck her how family orientated the whole get together was. Down the opposite end of the field a group of the players was having a game with some of the kids and she wasn’t sure who was having more fun, the children or the adults.

Bodhi and Dalton were amongst that group, along with Dalton’s brothers and Calum, and Carrie was finding it hard not to be distracted by the sight of her two men acting like clowns. She’d never seen either smile more broadly and it was with sadness she realised that before long, Dalton and Bodhi would each find a woman to settle down with and start a family of their own. They’d be such good daddies, something that was only adding to the list of reasons whatever it was they had had to finish sooner rather than later.

“You okay?” asked Nova, who was sitting beside her.

Carrie smiled sadly. “Just... thinking.”

“Do I need to ask what about?”

“No...”

“Try not to worry about the future, hun. Things have a way of working themselves out.”

What would that entail? Either Bodhi or Dalton finding a woman to settle down with, leaving her free to look more seriously at a relationship with the other? That would solve the problem of being excessively fond of two men at the same time, but... the idea of seeing either man with someone else made her feel queasy.

“Is Kat coming today?”

Nova laughed, “definitely not, she isn’t really a fan of big social things like this.”

“That’s a pity.”

“You are so transparent,” Nova said. “It’s almost painful. I meant it when I said everything will work out in the end, so please stop fretting. Just enjoy it, remember?!”

“Being able to enjoy it isn’t the problem... it’s enjoying it too much that I’m struggling with.”

“Can’t help how you feel, trust me. The harder you fight it, the more miserable you’ll be.”

“Why must you be so wise?” Carrie sighed and found her eyes drifting back to the cluster of men spread out on the southern end of the field.

Though there must have been thirty-odd men and at least as many kids playing, her eyes instantly picked out Dalton and Bodhi.
