"Edmond? Can you hear me?"

Edmond could hear the voice crystal clear. It was a welcome feeling to hear another person.

"Hmm. He's still pretty unresponsive. Shall I give him another jolt?"

Another voice. Edmond needed to warn them.

"No. Just wait a minute. Look. See, he's opening his eyes. Edmond? Can you hear me?"

Two faces peered down at him. A bright light hung low from the ceiling. It appeared to be a doctor and a male nurse.

The doctor rested a hand on his shoulder. "Edmond. How are you feeling? Do you recognise either of us?"

Edmond stared up at them vacantly. He tried to speak but only just managed a groggy moan. His lips felt like rubber. He tried to raise a hand, but it was sturdily restrained.

"Eddddmmmmooonnnddd!"

The dreaded voice penetrated deep into his core. It hadn't come from either of the two men stooped over him, but from somewhere deep within him. Panic overcame Edmond and he tried to shout but again all that came out was a gurgled noise.

The doctor turned to face the nurse and sighed. "Maybe one more. Take it a touch higher this time." The doctor picked up a tightly twisted flannel and forced it between Edmond's teeth. "Just try to relax. It'll all be over soon."

The nurse was fidgeting with dials on a large cumbersome device at the foot of the bed. He lifted two circular pads dripping with water, tethered to the device by coiled electrical cable. The nurse passed the small pads to the doctor and gave Edmond a little smirk before returning his attention to the device. "Ready, doctor."

The doctor leant over Edmond and pressed the electrodes against each temple.

Edmond strained his head from side to side but that too was bound to the hospital bed. He felt the cool of the wet material against the side of his head, escaping water trickled into his ears and down the nape of his neck.

"Three, two, one and..."

Edmond felt nothing.

He was flying again. Toward the light. Faster than before. There was no one to greet him this time. He flew through the blinding white until he saw a pinprick of darkness ahead, getting larger with every passing moment. It was the end of the pipe. For a split second he saw his own face, filling the tube with a lost and vacant expression. Deadened eyes and a mournful void of a mouth.
