“Dear Mr. Ribera,

Just a note from a new fan. I bought your recital album yesterday and am enjoying it very much. You meet my one great test of singers: what I call the ‘simple song’ test. Anybody can learn to sing flashily, but to make a very plain melody sound truly beautiful, as you do in ‘Come again’ for instance, is the mark of a real artist – like Victoria de los Angeles singing ‘Ebben? Ne andrò lontana.’

I am a professor of Italian at the state university here in Baltimore, and I coach the singers in Italian repertoire at the local conservatory. My language and literature work makes me all the more appreciative of the attention you pay to text in your interpretations.

Enough adulation. I really look forward to hearing more of you. If you are performing in the area any time soon, I would be delighted to come hear you in person. Perhaps you would let a new admirer buy you a glass of champagne.

Sincerely, etc.

P.S. My lover, Joe Andreoli, knew you slightly in Los Angeles, through mutual friends. He is not sure you would remember him. JCMcM”
