Chapter 15
The crash
My throat burned and my body ached like Iâd been tossed in the jaws of a vicious hawk. I blinked. The world had turned grey. Smoke clouded my eyes and thick dust floated in the air. I shook my head, trying to stop the ringing that buzzed like a bluebottle fly stuck inside my ears.
I struggled to my feet and put my face to the window in my box. A light flickered in the darkness, casting its beam over the surrounding mess of mangled metal. Everything felt strangely out of place. Then I realised why â we were upside down.
Voices muttered. Shapes shifted in the muted light.
Pilot Tom coughed. âIs everyone okay?â
Jack dragged himself to his knees, rubbing his head and wiping his bleeding nose on his sleeve. âIâm fine,â he said. âJust a bit shaken.â
âIâm okay too. At least, I think I am,â Gunner Harry mumbled. âWhat happened?â
âFour night-fighters attacked us,â Jack replied. âDonât know how we came out of there in one piece.â
âWell, not exactly one piece,â Pilot Tom said, shining his torch around. âBut weâre all alive. Thatâs a miracle, considering.â He twisted the dials on the radio. âMayday, Mayday. Come in, base. Itâs Blenheim 201.â Pilot Tom shook his head. âNothing. Itâs totally dead. Iâll switch on the emergency lighting, and you can give me a damage report, Jack.â
Jack clambered around the wreck of our plane and fiddled with the controls.
âThere are holes in the fuselage and the turret,â Jack said. âWireless set is clearly out of action and looks like the rudder controls are jammed.â
âSo basically, this plane is going nowhere,â Gunner Harry said, twisting his scarf in his hands. âAny idea where we are, at least?â
âHolland,â Jack replied.
Gunner Harry snorted. âCan you be more specific?â
Jack unfolded a map and stretched it out in front of him. He ran his finger across the page. âWe crossed the Zuiderzee at about three thirty. Given our speed and flight path and the time now, Iâd estimate we are around here.â He pressed his finger to the map.
âSo, what now?â Gunner Harry said. âDo you think they picked up our location at base?â
âWe canât be sure,â Pilot Tom replied. âThe radio could have dropped out when we were hit.â
âIâll check outside and see if thereâs any sign of life,â Gunner Harry said.
He crawled beneath the hatch, lay on his back and kicked the door open. Then he stood and poked his head through the gap. âLooks like just fields and farmland out here,â he said. âShould we sit tight or see if we can find help?â
âWe should release the pigeon,â Jack said. âThatâs our best chance.â
They all turned to me. I gulped. Everything I had feared was coming true.
Jack opened the hatch and lifted me from my box. âAll right, little guy?â he said. âThat was quite an ordeal, wasnât it?â Jack examined me, stretching out my wings. âHe looks fine. No visible injuries,â he said. âYou can do this, canât you, Royal Blue?â
Could I? Iâd never flown such a distance before, and Iâd have to cross the ocean.
