15 A Chessboard

I watched Devin’s eyes become large and round as he made the link between what happened to me at the High Council table and what happened to Carrie Bennett in the hot Egyptian sun. A second later, he’d smoothed his face into an expression of polite interest and angled his body so he was between me and Raph. Always protecting me. Always on my side.

“But the dungeon’s empty now, isn’t it?” Devin asked. “There’s no risk.”

It was what I would have asked myself if I hadn’t been frozen with shock. The dungeon was giving out the same energy signature as the message. The energy signature that called to me at the same time as it made me so scared I could hardly think straight. The energy signature no one else could feel. Where was it coming from if the dungeon was empty?

“It’s empty,” agreed Raph, “and there’s a lot of defensive spellwork in its walls. But we’re not taking any chances.”

“Is it your spellwork?” said Devin.

“Actually, no. It was there already.”

Perhaps the Guardians’ Library wasn’t such a bad place to spend the night. As a Master Mage, I’d be able to access all of it, including the protected records that had been off-limits to me before. If there were any more traces of that mysterious energy signature, I could find them and perhaps seek out their origin.

Devin glanced over his shoulder, and I gave him a quick nod to show I was fine.

“Look, guys, I have to leave,” said Raph. “I’ll get into all kinds of trouble if I’m late. See you in the morning. Academy of Magic,” he added, disappearing in a flicker of silver energy.

“What the hell, Luca?” said Devin, crossing the room. “Did you know those pyramids were on top of the dungeon?”

“I suspected. I wasn’t sure until now.”

“What does it mean?”

I shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine. I have no idea why I reacted that way.”

“For a minute or two, I thought you’d died, you know? I mean, Mary thought Carrie had died.” Devin paused, and his emotions expanded, a complicated swirl of anxiety and interest. “It can’t be a coincidence.”

“Did you notice an energy signature?” I asked.

“Where?”

“On the message they showed us from the dungeon.”

He frowned and shook his head. “I’m guessing you did?”

“Yeah. With hindsight, I’m pretty sure it was at the pyramids too. And it was scary. It reminded me of the Spell Tracker.”

Devin made a face. “Sounds horrible. No wonder you blacked out.”

Guiltily, I looked down at the purple rug. I’d told Devin the truth about the strange energy signature. But that was yesterday. Things had changed. Right now, my magical core was basically a Light and Shadow Mage cocktail, yet I’d never felt better. I wondered if I would find the energy signature so scary if I encountered it again.

“OK,” said Devin, taking my hand. “We’d better visit the library and see what we can find out.”

“I know you hate it there,” I said. “But I think it’s our best option.
