CHAPTER 6

FLAGGED DOWN

I turned the ignition, and the car roared to life. I loved the sound of the revving engine. It was a sound I’d heard my whole life at the races.

“Make two laps,” Kyle said. “And remember, this is not a race. Stay in your own lanes. Back when I was just learning to drive—”

But his words were cut off by the waving green flag.

I pushed the gas. The car rumbled down the track.

Robby was in the lane next to me. I waved at him, but he didn’t even glance my way.

I didn’t have time to worry about it. There I was, in the very race car Jo and I had painted. And I was driving around a track, just like a professional driver.

As we neared the first curve, I saw Robby waving at me and pointing.

“What?” I shouted, slowing down.

He laughed and sped ahead of me. Then he swerved into my lane.

“Hey!” I shouted. I had to step on my brakes so I wouldn’t hit him.

“What are you doing?” I muttered.
