Statistical cluster analysis

Introduction

In the last chapter, we learned about detecting natural groupings in our data using machine learning–based clustering methods.

In this chapter, we’re going to explore clusters of a different variety—statistical clusters.

The statistical clustering methods we’ll cover in this chapter are used to measure local clustering of an attribute’s values over space. We’re looking for places where high values cluster together and low values cluster together.

Methods in this chapter can help us answer the following types of questions:

Where are there clusters of low test scores for K-12 students?

Where are the hospitals with higher readmission rates than their neighbors?

Where are there clusters of citizens without internet access?
