4.7 Conclusion
GIS functionalities in public health analysis are still substantially underdeveloped in an Open Source GIS (OSG) software context in comparison with a desktop and commercial software application context. Majority of the OSG software use only choropleth maps and other cartograms like isopleth, graduated symbols to convey health-related information. Beyond the traditional line, bar or pie charts and unconventional chart types have been used by other OSG software. Despite the practicality of the supplementary maps and charts, an interpretation tricky may ascend for end users without cartography background. Moreover, OSG softwares lag behind significantly in terms of providing users with robust methods of spatial and geostatistical analysis. Developing an effective OSG software requires collaborations of multiple disciplines. Integrating health-related data from multiple sources and enhancing the data analysis functions in Open Source GIS software to expand their recital are challenges that necessitate strenuous efforts. However, an appropriate balance still desires to be struck between Open Source software and secrecy matters. To lessen the resources essential for evolving effective OSG and providing useful information of health phenomena, espousing geomashup and open source models and firming local, regional, national, and global partnerships are essential.
