Healing potions are always good things. If someone offers you a healing potion, always take it. You can’t have too many. This was better than just, poof, your health bar is better. It tasted like life itself, which I suppose it basically was. The rush that ran through me was more than exhilarating, and I felt pain vanish as it washed wounds away.

There were still aches, and there was still damage. Oh, was there still damage. Wounds disappeared, yes, but half my Health bar was a silver line still rather low. The potion didn’t affect the artificial parts. Yeah.

Altion brought his potion up to drink it, and an orange line lanced through it. The potion shattered with sparkling red splatter as the orange beam of death continued into, and back out of, the knight’s head.

“No!” I yelled ineffectively as his Health bar vanished, and he dropped to the too-regular sci-fi cobblestones. In the distraction of watching my first friend in the game die, knowing somewhere in the real world there was some guy dying with him, I got hit twice more, eating up a good quarter of what the potion had given back.

I ran. What else could I do?

I ducked and stayed low, weaving from table to table, knocking them over for cover. A little cross street led away. In the back of my head it had already been a Plan B, but that Plan B looked a lot differently then.

Shots missed me as I jumpboosted my way over the light traffic in the way. Another sign it was a game: people still drove by while a major gunfight went on right next to them. At least one shot hit a vehicle, which crashed into . . . something. No wasting time looking behind me.

I sprinted down the narrower street, just one lane each way with barely any traffic. I kept to the middle of the road, weaving to keep as many cars as possible between me and however many were pursuing. A horn blared at me. Dozens of shots missed me in the length of a block. One didn’t. Slivers of red Health bar remained. Damage penalties reduced my speed, as if the pain wasn’t enough punishment.

I took a diving leap, hoping to stay hidden by cars I dove between. I landed in a roll, gracefully rolling up to my feet and continued running.

Or, that’s how it had played out in my head before I tried it.

Okay, fine. I faceplanted.

I scrambled to my feet and ran. At least my Stamina bar was dropping slowly, that was something.

“Don’t let him get away!” someone yelled behind me.

I squeezed a few ineffective shots off before rounding another corner.
