USE OF COMBAT ARMS
Artillery
The nature of the terrain binds artillery to the roads and limits the maneuverability of artillery in shifting fire positions. Therefore, in the defense reserve positions should be chosen beforehand. Approach paths should be prepared for these positions.
Fire from primary artillery positions before the commencement of dynamic actions is not necessarily conducted; to conduct fire it is necessary to roll out individual guns to temporary positions.
A peculiarity in using artillery is the absence of observation points on forested directions, which also reduces the maneuverability of artillery. The use of observation aerostats, in which we still lack experience, would be useful in this respect.
The presence of a large number of concealed approaches makes it possible to roll out individual guns, even of heavy caliber, to the forward edge of the defense and from there to conduct fire for the destruction of defense structures.
In an offensive with poor road conditions, artillery chiefs should foresee maneuvering by trajectory and support of artillery accompanying the infantry with ammunition. Poor roads may hinder the delivery of ammunition. Therefore, it is necessary to foresee the necessity of bringing it up great distances, for which it is necessary to create, for a certain period, special teams of handlers out of rear subunits, ordnance teams without materiel, and, in individual cases, infantry subunits.
Infantry commanders should fully cooperate with the artillery men, since, without artillery support, the infantry could find itself in very difficult situations.
